Experience a new work taking shape as acclaimed choreographer and performer Vincent Sekwati Koko Mantsoe returns to UJ as the 2026 UJ Artist in Residence for dance.
In the first rendition of Mpeyane’s Dream/Ipupo , Mantsoe draws on more than three decades of creative practice to explore identity, memory and ancestral connection. At its centre is a character searching for a sense of self, dreaming his way towards his ancestors, his spirits and his own path.
Bringing traditional and contemporary dance into conversation, the work draws on Mantsoe’s family heritage of sangoma practice. His original music, inspired by isiXhosa sounds, deepens the connection between the character’s dreams and the spiritual world.
This performance offers audiences an opportunity to encounter a work in development—an intimate exploration of movement, spirituality and transformation.
